How do we avoid fake news in the midst of a busy life?
OVERVIEW
In today's fast-paced world, individuals face challenges in accessing unbiased news across various social media and traditional platforms. Moreover, busy individuals struggle to stay informed about global events due to time constraints. Oxylin seeks to address this by providing concise, unbiased summaries of current events, enabling users to stay updated without investing excessive time.

RESEARCH INSIGHT
Many online news consumers prefer short-form content, especially on social media and video platforms. About 66% regularly watch short news videos weekly, showing a clear preference for concise updates. 2024 Digital News Report

Card Iteration
The initial direction was to have the cards move from left to right as the user interact with the information but after a feedback session and several iterations, I settled on aligning with the existing mental model of allowing users swipe vertically through the cards. Additionally, there's an option to use a scroll bar for navigation.
Three cards are displayed at the same time on the screen, with the center card larger. This design highlights one piece of information at a time while encouraging swipes for more.
Personalised news help keep the user engaged and informed
While we want users to get updates on the trending news, we also want them to personalise their experience, this ties into the goal of cutting out the noise and reducing the amount of time spent on getting relevant news. We decided to allow users select only 3 major topic of interest plus a trending, highlight and For You category on the platform.
Cross-referencing news sources and sharing their links is key to avoiding fake news.
The AI explores and analyzes news from various sources to provide a comprehensive perspective. These sources are displayed at the bottom of each card and by sharing these sources, it enhances transparency and encourages users to explore different viewpoints, helping to ensure a more informed understanding.
The information hierarchy is also well designed with a large headline, short paragraph or bullet points with relevant emojis and an image to give more visual context to the heading. This ensures that the user is able to easily scan through the information.
CONSTRAINT
Due to technical constraints, we decided to build the web app version first, with plans to develop a mobile version in the future.
Our research primarily relied on online articles, case studies, reports, and survey results due to time and geographical constraints. However, for version two, I plan to gather insights directly from real users.
